This weekend’s live pick from Team Freshnet’s Manchester correspondent
This week’s under the radar gig in Manchester is taking place in another small venue (the best type), which is not really a venue. Kraak is a small, in fact very small event space that is tucked away up a cobbled ginnel in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. This Saturday (26th) will see Oxford’s Jonquil take their place in the corner of the room that is Kraak.
The band’s bio just says ‘recorded an album in our bedrooms -> released an album -> played a few shows -> recorded another album in a deserted house -> toured all over europe -> built a studio -> built another studio -> went to america -> recorded an album in a proper studio’.
Not really much to go on there, but on first listen I thought to myself that if this band’s sound is going to be appreciated, it will definitely be in Manchester. Not because they have what is traditionally a Mancunian sound (Madchester/Joy Division etc), but because for they fit in nicely with at least two of our other recent local acts. This band could easily bridge the gap between Everything Everything and the amazingly ace Dutch Uncles. So if any of those two acts are up your street, then it will be well worth grabbing some loose change (£6) and getting along to this Saturday night for what should a great intimate gig.
