This week: TOODAR
Toodar are a 4 piece Pop band from London, namely Isabel, James, Tom and Oli. They make beautiful technicolor Pop Music.
Their song Ten Paces appears alongside 19 other handpicked tracks on HOME VOLUME 3 – an album curated by Tom Robinson & my bad self which has just been released as a FREE gift by Rash Records. You can download the whole thing for your listening pleasure right now at rashrecords.co.uk
What makes Toodar stand out from the crowd for me is their natural inbuilt ability to hit 9 on the ‘Warm & Melodic’ meter I keep in my head.
So why only 9? Well over 9 would be too much melody even for a strapping (yet soft) lad like me – and under 9 might mean there is still work to do. So for me on all levels 9 is just right & Toodar have hit top marks. They are a 100% full proof band that tick all the necessary boxes (none of that 110% or a million % rubbish that people talk of these days).
Their meshing together of vocals (always swoontastic Tom), drums, bass, keys and guitars in a total unique Toodar stylee grabbed my attention from the off – and has been canny enough to hold it and invite it back again and again.
FOTN’s Tom R is a big fan of this band – so you may already know Toodar from Ten Paces and their equally excellent song Toy – and what a video for that song too ! We here at FOTN suggest you remind yourselves how wonderful this band are (or indeed seek them out for the first time) on their Soundcloud page.
With a new EP recorded and due to drop any time, the band are currently preparing for live dates. Word reaches us that Toodar are something rather special as a ‘live’ band too – so if you get the chance do check them out in London on 21st June.
1. What are you up to at the moment?
Tom – We’re in Alaska Studio under the railway arches of Waterloo Station in London. We’ve just finished rehearsing the songs from our new record and are about to attempt to get our equipment onto a bus.
2. Favourite childhood memory?
Tom: My dad persuaded the rest of my family to sail a small boat off a beach in Dorset. A few hours later we were swept out of the harbour to sea. Fortunately, we were rescued.
Oli: I can top that… I once toboganned under a fence into the middle of a frozen pond. That was a problem, but the attention was cool.
Isabel: It’s got to be the police chief from the film, Jaws. If a shark was after you, you’d want him in your boat.
5. What/who makes you laugh?
Tom: The slapping sound of duck’s feet on concrete when they run.
6. Describe what you do?
Isabel: We make pop
Tom: We’ve spent the last three months obsessing over pop records and the new EP is the fruit of that.
7. Whose hair would you like to have for just one day?
Tom: It has to be The King. Give me a jump suit and Elvis’ hair any day.
8. Best musical experience to date?
Tom: We’ve just finished a new EP. We made it exactly how we wanted to. Sometimes not having an expensive budget can be a very good thing.
Isabel: A secret preview will be available to all toodar likers on our Facebook very soon .
Oli: Er… shortening the length of my 909 kick sample to a fraction of a second, setting it to loop then attaching it to an acoustic trigger on my snare drum with polyphony set to 8, then letting rip.
Tom: That too.
9. What artist inspires you?
Tom: I don’t know his name, but whatever guitarist plays on Thriller by Michael Jackson. It accounts for a lot of our new record.
Isabel – Also, other contemporary bands who are making pop records in a really experimental and joyful way: Clock Opera are great – and Vinyl Jacket
and Mammal Club from Newcastle.
10. What does Fresh On The Net mean to you?
Isabel: To us it means that if we make the music that we want to make, someone out there will be listening. You can’t ask for more than that.
