PRICK AND DING #41: ORDINARY NOISE

Each week Fresh On The Net invites an artist or band to answer a short series of questions in Prick & Ding: the two and a half minute interview. It's convenient and quick - like enjoying a tasty microwave meal!

THIS WEEK: ORDINARY NOISE
Ordinary Noise are a 4 piece indie band from Colchester – namely Lou Terry, Ross Connell, Malachi Siner-Cheverst and  Jonny Poole. We are all about new music here at Fresh On the Net and they don’t come much newer than Ordinary Noise.

In fact they’re so new that only a couple of weeks ago they just won their Sixth Form Battle Of The Bands contest at Colchester Arts Centre. It’s especially pleasing to me – and fair warms the cockles of my heart – that they are locals boys from my neck of the woods too… Big Up Yourself COLCHESTER!!!

I saw the boys play a set recently & I was instantly won over by their fresh & assured sound & their wonderful song ‘Confidence'(below). This song shows such rich potential and I have a strong gut feeling that with songs already as strong as this they are very likely to do great things/move people with their music/make girls swoon/make boys jealous/be happy.

Ace punk poet John Cooper Clarke has picked up on their goodness by recently playing ‘Backstabber’ on BBC 6 Music during his stint on Jarvis Cocker’s Sunday Service show.Word gets out fast when the good are involved methinks.

They have live dates coming up so if you are around,do make the effort to check these boys out & jump on their snap, crackle & pop.

Luck & laughter on your journey boys.

Ladies & Gentlemen Fresh On The Net would like to introduce you to Ordinary Noise

1. What are you up to at the moment?
Working on some new songs, and getting ready for a gig at The Arts Centre tonight.

2. Favourite childhood memory?
Lou and Ross; We went to America together on an exchange when we were 14ish, I (Lou) got Ross into Radiohead on the plane, and we went to a museum entirely dedicated to Coke (the drinkable kind) and tried 50 different types of it from around the world.
Jonny: Stroked a whale.
Ki: I never had a childhood, “I was born on a Monday and by Thursday I had a job.”

3. Hero?
Lou: Benjamin Zephaniah-“You’re on your bike and all is fine you get caught up in a washing line.  Don’t worry, be happy!”
Ross: Jack White.
Jonny: Batman, An ordinary man…does extraordinary things!
Ki: Jello Biafra, Lead singer of the Dead Kennedys

4. Villain?
Lou: Simon Cowell, for his crimes against music.
Ross: The zombies in Walking Dead.
Jonny: Gary Oak.
Ki: I don’t have one.

5. What/who makes you laugh?
Jonny’s kitchen at band practice, we always seem to crack up in there somehow over our routine cheese toasties. Also we all love Family Guy.

6. Describe what you do?
Go to college and play music, that is about it at the moment.  We’re gradually trying to phase out college and phase in more band.

7. Who’s hair would you like to have for just one day?
Ki’s golden mane.

8. Best musical experience to date
We played at The Dublin Castle last month and it was the best gig we’ve ever done, it felt completely different to any other gig.  A big thanks to everyone that came, and we look forward to playing there again on Saturday 13th April.

9. What artist inspires you?
Lou: Jeffrey Lewis for is ability to write a song about anything, be it the history of punk, space ducks, or even slime.
Ross: There are too many bands to mention that inspire me, to name a few; Codes in the Clouds, an upcoming instrumental band that are gonna go far! John Frusicante’s Solo work is also really good, ‘Murderers’ is a really good track. Alberta Cross, I had been dying to see them and i finally got to see them at Reading last year. And probably Fleet Foxes as well.
Jonny: John Coltrane for sax. Band wise… Too many, no one band, just too many.
Ki: Velvet Underground.

10. What does Fresh On The Net mean to you?
A really good place to discover new and interesting bands.
