#Folk6Music

Benji Kirkpatrick

The Full English digital archive
On Sunday 13 October 2013, NowPlaying @6Music presented a two hour show in celebration of The Full English digital archive of 68,000+ songs, documents and artifacts hosted online by the English Folk Dance And Song Society. We also highlighted the new 12-track The Full English album put together by Fay Hield from the EFDSS archive with an all-star ensemble featuring Seth Lakeman, Martin Simpson. Nancy Kerr, Sam Sweeney, Rob Harbron and Ben Nicholls.

As usual with NPA6M, our playlist was put together on the fly from suggestions made by listeners via social media before and during the show. You can see the tracklist and listen again to the whole show here until 8pm on Sunday October 20th 2013. But as soon as the suggestions started coming in, it was clear that “folk” means very different things to different people.

Some 6 Music listeners understood “folk” to mean sixties singer-songwriters such as Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Donovan, Judy Collins, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Neil Young, Nick Drake, The Byrds and Tim Buckley – or latterday counterparts like Gillian Welch, First Aid Kit, The Barr Brothers etc.

Younger listeners seemed to be nominating pretty much anything where an acoustic guitar was involved – through Angus and Julia Stone, Arab Strap, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billie, Damien Rice, Darren Hayman, Eddie Reader, Jeffrey Lewis, Johnny Flynn, King Creosote, Laura Marling, RM Hubbert and Stornoway among many, many other suggestions.

Other named artists widely perceived by the general public as as “folk” performers – such as Bert Jansch, Christy Moore, Davey Graham, Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, Joan Baez, John Martyn, Pentangle, Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny, Steeleye Span and The Dubliners – along with punk-influenced successors such as the Pogues, Billy Bragg and the Levellers. But many of these acts are better known for own original songs than for raiding the vaults of Cecil Sharp House for material.

Cecil Sharp House

Which leaves us with the large and vociferous group who broadly understand “folk” music to mean “traditional” – as opposed to merely “acoustic” – music – and their suggestions fell into two distinct camps. Some nominated longstanding interpreters of the canon such as Chris Wood, Dick Gaughan, Jez Lowe, June Tabor, Kris Drever, Martin Carthy, Nic Jones, Peggy Seeger, Shelagh McDonald, Shirley Collins, The Albion Band, The Copper Family and various members of The Watersons.

Others suggested tunes by artists from a folk background who (arguably) lean more towards innovation and new forms of hybrid – performers such as Bellowhead, Crooked Still, Eliza Carthy, Faustus, Imagined Village, Karine Polwart, Kate Rusby, Kathryn Tickell, Lau, Martin Simpson, Melrose Quartet, Nancy Elizabeth, Sam Carter, Sam Lee, Seth Lakeman, Show Of Hands and The Unthanks.

This is by no means an exhaustive list – even of the suggestions that came in – let alone of the vast wealth of recording artists from the past 90 years whose work has been associated in one way or another with the F-word. Since we only had 120 minutes for the show from start to finish (including two news bulletins and tips from half a dozen folk experts) we could only play about one in thirty of those suggestions. Our producer also had to try and find a balance bwteen those listeners demanding we play “proper” unaccompanied traditional folk ballads and those who were seriously suggesting that a “folk” music playlist should include the likes of David Bowie, Nirvana and The Mekons.

@tuftythecat unhelpfully described Seven Long Years by Jim Moray as “folk music for people who don’t like folk music.”
Folk purist @KieronMoyles tweeted “Maybe it’s best to abandon #Folk6Music to those who think its anyone with acoustic instruments. Differentiate between Folk and Traditional music”
@williamoulton had a waspish suggestion “If we’re having a debate about what IS folk music, shouldn’t we play Like A Rolling Stone by Dylan” #electic #Judas #Folk6Music
@KieronMoyles thought trying to define the genre was near-meaningless: “Arguably Angels by Robbie Williams is now a folk song. It’s part of people’s lives, it’s sung at weddings, funerals, birthdays.” #Folk6Music
@Lowlandslady felt we wandered too far from our starting point at The Full English digital archive: “Lots of American suggestions here – isn’t it supposed to be English Folk?”
On Facebook a very angry Neil Murray thought that on the contrary we played far TOO MUCH English music: “As far as I can tell, not a single song by a Celtic musician. Almost entirely English with a smattering of North America. BBC6Music clearly forgot they are a UK wide station”.

John McCusker

The one thing that was clear from the overwhelming response to the show was that, however you choose to define “folk” music, there is a huge and unfulfilled demand for more of it on the radio in general and on 6 Music on particular. I’ve been saying for years that we need a specialist Folk/Roots show on the station, and the response to yesterday evening’s show was the proof. For what it’s worth, below is a transcript of all the Tweets and Facebook posts made during the show – in raw, unprocessed format. The list is huge, quite hard going, and took me several hours to extract and format on the page.

If anyone has the time and dedication to sift through and come up with a formatted list of specific artists, tracks – and who suggested them – I’ll gladly post it here with links to the music. I’m sure I’m not the only one who would be extremely interested to learn more about this diverse and facinating genre in all its many manifestations…

One last morsel of food for thought: @juliaatthehub pointed us at this report on the Impact Of Folk Festivals On Cultural Tourism. “Even in 2003 a total of 350 festivals generated a £77m spend. Niche music eh?!”  The the fact that we have 350 Folk/Roots/Acoustic festivals annually in the UK is mind-boggling. It’s definitely a field of music that deserves wider exposure and respect in the media generally. And now here are those tweets…

Jethro Tull For pioneers of modern folk, you cannot ignore the oyster band. Combined with the honey dripping voice of June tabor and you can’t really get much genuinely folkier. That said bit of folky Tull always goes don’t well from ‘the woods’

WILLIAM OULTON Can you play some Fairport Convention. I get put off some folk music, especially the backward looking Hey-Nonny-No variety, but I’ve recently discovered Fairport and Richard Thompson’s solo work. Can you play The Deserter as a fantastic example of how to adapt a traditional song without sounding too old fashioned. In fact, it sounds more like the Velvet Underground than Steeleye Span. Plus Sandy Denny’s voice would make a statue cry.

NICK BOWYER One world john martyn A genius and he beat Sid viscous up for heckling. A man who fought for his convictions true folk.

HANNAH STEPHENSON Would love to hear Raggle Taggle Gypsy – ideally sung by my mum, but I’ll accept the Waterboys version.

FI STIMPSON My dad has suggested Jethro Tull. I concur.

FRAN DUGGAN The Houghton Weavers- poverty Knocks… Or Blackpool Belle..proper northern folk

KLAUS HARVEY How about the astounding ‘Rip the Calico’ by The Bothy Band. It’s a jig and five reels.

ANDY GOULDING Iris dement wasteland of the free

WILL RIDING Don’t like Mumfords but let’s not be snobby, eh?

HELEN CASTLEY Love the show. Please play Mumford and Sons. I reckon there’s a few fans out there!

ELLA PATTINSON The water boys, a man is in love. X

MARK STIG STURGEON If you don’t include something by the Big Nosed [email protected] from Barking, aka Billy Bragg, there is no justice. Milkman, or his Woody Guthrie ‘Way over yonder’. And what about Costello/Wyatt ‘Shipbuilding’?

ADAM REES Anything by Nic Jones.

FIONA STAFFORD Perhaps not the epitome of folk for some, but you should definitely play Karine Polwart – We’re All Leaving. People need to hear this song.

STEPHEN MAGUIRE I could pick a few hundred thousand good folk songs. Tim buckley song for you, is a beauty!

JOHN MCMILESOFSMILES You’ve got to play some Shirley Collins – no other figure spans the full breadth of what people are discussing above as ‘folk’ – personally and professionally she connects the second great UK revival (Ewan MacColl/Peggy Seeger’s Holborn scene), the US roots reawakening (relationship & Southern States collecting tour with Alan Lomax), the 60s psych folk new wave (married to Fairport Convention’s Ashley Hutchings), and all this before remembering they she’s THE key English traditional singer of the 20th Century. These days Shirley’s influence extends to artists on both sides odd the Atlantic, and as disparate as Kate Rusby/Bellowhead and Devandra Banhart/Joanna Newsom! Add to that her current presidency of EFDSS and most recent recorded work with Current 93, and well… What more needs to be said?

Shirley & Dolly Collins – Just As The Tide Was A’Flowing (Live)
Live in London 1979

PETER LEESON Tom, recently seen on introducing a wee band from Keswick – you might like “Musical Musical Priest” by Stooshie also on Facebook! Musical Priest, by Stooshie

ZIYAD SAID-WARDELL The times they are changin’ – bob dylan

JOHN NICHOLLS Also, anything by THE DUBLINERS

JOHN NICHOLLS BERT JANSCH – Running from Home. Or anything of LA Turnaround. Real Folk music.

ADRIAN FOSS Chris Wood – Hollow Point. Modern classic.

KENT HARRIS The Windmills of Norfolk by Matt Deighton from The Villager album – perfect, modern pastoral English folk

JULIE REYNOLDS Another vote for the truly stunning ‘Who knows where the time goes?’ by Fairport Convention. Sandy Denny’s voice on it is sublime.

ANDI SERCOMBE “Bed of Straw”. Duncan McFarlane Band please

KIRSTY GLOVER Show of Hands MUST NOT be overlooked! ‘Folk’ music should be all about social commentary at its grass-roots level, and Messrs Knightley and Beer are prime exponents. ‘Arrogance, Ignorance and Greed’ or ‘The Napoli’ are great examples. You know it makes sense, Tom!

RUSTY CODPIECE I Want To See The Brights Lights Tonight by Richard & Linda Thompson.

RUSTY CODPIECE Calvary Cross by Richard Thompson.

IAIN SKEG SEYMOUR Bees wing by i think richard thompson but i may be wrong, it was best covered by Mad Dog Mcrea such a beautiful song!!

JENNY LEE Anything by Show of Hands, surely?

DAVID QUINN Matty Groves, obviously

ANDY MILLS Martin Carthy, Al O’Donnel, or Planxty. I can’t pick one song out from all they’ve done, but any would do. So fine they all are.

TONY MACKLIN Bit too late to suggest “Flowers of the Forest” then?

NEIL MURRAY As far as I can tell, not a single song by a Celtic musician. Almost entirely English with a smattering of North America. BBC6Music clearly forgot they are a UK wide station. Frankly, given the strength and heritage of folk music from those countries, it is an outrage. I love 6 Music but they have seriously pissed off a lot of people tonight.

ELLY MAY “Our Town” by Kate Rusby

DAVE TONY BLACKBEARD RICHARDS Neil adamson I didn’t know ac/dc were folk ?

DAVE TONY BLACKBEARD RICHARDS Kevin Young any ideas?

CHRISTOPHER PARKIN Play some Sam Carter. He’s one of the new breed of great singer songwriters and a fantastic guitar play to boot!

EMILY VON KIRCHNER This Is Not The End by Claire Maguire is a little unexpected gem – OK so it has the strings in the background to mellow the ears of the more commercially orientated, but I find it a most moving and tender rendition. Her voice lends herself well, I wish she would do more like this…

PHIL DORAGH I quite like Eden Burning’s version of Matty Groves.

ALISTAIR LITTLEJOHN Would be good to hear some Nic Jones. The BBC 4 documentary the other week was quite amazing.

The first line always stops me in my tracks: “Liz took a train going north, didn’t say she’d be coming back.” Or Jackie Oates’ version of Junk by McCartney, which is on her Lullabies album. It’s not a lullaby, but that didn’t put her off, so give it a whirl.

SHELLEY DE ROSSI A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall- Bob Dylan.

JILL HOLMEN Sandy Denny’s version of Blackwaterside. It was one of the first songs of hers that I was played by a friend at Uni. And it really opened my mind to folk music. Blew away all the clichéd ‘ bearded, finger-in-the-ear’ prejudice.
