Bands and songwriters can now record at home to a high professional standard at very low cost – and broadcast worldwide via MySpace, Last.fm and Reverbnation etc at no cost at all. The problem with this free-for-all is that there’s an overwhelming amount of material, not all of it great.
BBC Introducing: Fresh On The Net is a late-night weekend radio show offering a guide to the best new online tunes, presented by Tom Robinson. Traditional specialist radio shows tell listeners what records they can buy. We tell them where to hear the music itself – for free – at the click of the mouse.
Is it legal? Yes. Is it desirable? We don’t know. It’s just the way things are. Our mission is to connect listeners with new music, and musicians with new listeners.
The fact that the show goes out in the middle of the night is irrelevant thanks to the BBC iPlayer – you can listen anytime via the above links, and stop or pause playback at will. The podcast offers a dozen full tracks handpicked from the show every week.
The submission process for the show is painless and free – there’s no need for artists to press CDs, hire pluggers etc. Using a public web page listeners and musicians can tell us the URL of any music they like, including their own.
We get over 200 recommendations a week. Every single suggestion gets heard and considered for the programme. CDs, pluggers and release dates don’t come into it. If we like what we hear online, we play it. Simple as that.

“It’s staggering that a national BBC station gives over 4 hours of airtime a week to completely unknown artists in such a wide variety of genres. As a musician Tom Robinson knows the amount of effort and creativity that has gone into the tracks he plays. His style is personal – like listening to a friend as he chats about real people and real songs. And by broadcasting homepage details for every artist in the show, he creates a direct and transparent link between listeners and musicians.”
