Spot on as ever Tom.

When they catch on, that's when the traditional/old music industry will stop haemorrhaging cash. Meanwhile, this does leave room for the enterprising and the independents to take advantage of the community and the technology of YouTube!

Haha - well that's true Steve, if somebody's absolutely determined to save themselves 79p at all costs, they can indeed rip the streaming audio from a web page. But it'll only ever be 96kbps quality from MySpace and 128kbps from most others.

Whereas if a track's played on Radio 1 it can be recorded through a decent FM stereo in very-much-better-than-mp3 quality. But you never hear of record companies only letting Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens broadcast 90 second clips of their latest releases.

There's no logic to it, that's all I'm saying.

Only a tiny minority of artists ever get their work played on national radio in any case. If an artist won't even stream it on their own web page how else are people ever going to hear it?

Not wishing to sound all Bono-like [Dawkins forbid!] If a track can be streamed it can be recorded by Audacity or similar... Now where's that "Home Taping Is Killing Music" T-Shirt?

We already need to find some other way of making it all work financially - for one possibility check out http://www.pledgemusic.com

Just for the record, the label aren't giving away free downloads of the above single. They're just letting people hear it for free online... The argument is over whether this will decrease or increase sales.

Ah, but playing devil's advocate - at what point do we come so close to just giving it away, that we just give it away and find some other way of making it all work financially?

Dear Tom
thanks for this interesting post, I heard about Music Brainz in the past but I wasn't aware about its features and possibilities. It's nice to know that it's under public domain (other parts under Creative Commons License). I just wanted to make a comment, a while ago I discovered a platform for streaming and downloading "open source" music: Jamendo http://www.jamendo.com/en/ it seems to be quite big in France but not in the UK. Music can be downloaded for free (legally) and artists license their work under Creative Commons. Don't know if Jamendo synchronises metadata with Music Brainz, they probably do. I think Jamendo is a very powerful platform for independent artists to distribute free music having their work protected under a license.

In the 3 and half years since i first booked Dirty Weekend to play my hometown (Hartlepool) i've either booked them, or travelled with them up and down the country to over 25 gigs. everywhere they go they turn heads, every city, every town, from the workmens clubs to the swanky wine bars.

They're a group of lads so down to earth and friendly but with a passion and a spark, a hunger and talent which amounts to more than your average mainstream pop chart top 10 artists put together.

all they need is the break they deserve...and if i had a smidgen of the cash needed these days i'd be all over it like simon cowell on a shit pop act!

Sirens has the potential to throw them in at the deep end. i really hope it does.
