    ARTISTS:
The point of this page is to try out your music on strangers. The votes you get here will not increase your chances of radio airplay. So PLEASE DON’T tell friends/family/fans you’re on the Listening Post this weekend – they’ll take it as a hint to come and vote for you – and don’t vote for yourselves either.

We can always tell when lots of new people show up and start voting for one particular artist and we always disqualify those artists instantly and permanently.

  24. Hello, Kiddies!

How are we all doing on this fine Saturday morning?

Discovered some quiet gems in this week’s inbox. Particularly enjoyed the lazy, hazy swing of CUBOZA “Tin Man”, and the delicate intricacy and quiet grace of The Daydream Club “Piano Project” from the main inbox.

    This ‘ere be my choices…

    DANNY STARR – Our Design
    – Love the tumbling stream of words sat so naturally to the cascading melody. Open, “in the room” feel to drums and acoustics, contrasted by the electric guitars shimmering in the ambient, like a blues bar traveling from hyperspace with Danny Starr’s voice soaring across the subspace.

ELL IVY – Did You Love Me?
    – Ell Ivy’s vocals stop you in your tracks. Like sunlight breaking through the clouds on a still winter morning. The track hustles and rushes in sudden gatherings of pace. Acoustics playing off each other left to right, establishing width and shifting delight for the ears. Wonderful use of harmonies sat wide and deep into the reverb. Delicate additions of piano and electric guitar adding dashes of color, applied by quick, light brushstrokes.

HIVEMIND – Crying All The Time
    – Guitars grind tight with a fizzy, dry-electric tone, edged in glorious rust (Electric guitars have to sound a little wrong to sound right and these sound just the right amount of wrong. Naaasty). The smack of the snare lands blunt and unrefined. Kick and bass padding and dabbing, driving the track in rapid-fire bolts of low sound pressure; drummer & bassist working well in tandem (I do love a band with a well-worked rhythm section.. so nice when the kids can be bothered to get the basics right). The vocals sore and scorch, fused by saturation and brought in lashings of punk attitude and rock ‘n’ roll strut. Breaking down into raw unedited shout, splintering against the tortured distortion (I’m a sucker for shouty, shouty vocals). Though not yet the finished article, Hivemind have all the components necessary to grow into a first-rate/stand-out/next-level (apply hyperbole to taste) punk-rock outfit. Play ’em loud, kiddies. Then play them louder.

    OLA SZMIDT – Rooted
    – Tripping vocal loops smolder out of the ambient as the track arrives at a slow-burn. Vocals glide together as birds might riding the currents and drafts of the landscape. Layers of melody rise up, heavy and earthy. The track collapsing into words bled long into protracted phonetics, like ancient spirit noise or animal cry. Crafted with immense care and attention, “Rooted” radiates passion and artistic belief. An uncompromising world of sound texture and tone.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF TV – Me, You And A Dog
    – Arriving at speed, “Me, You And A Dog” keeps its foot floored throughout. Cymbals crash, spraying great rasping waves of metallic fizz across the track. Electric six strings twist and rifle in rocketed drives to the stratosphere. Kick and snare working in a fast smack & punch pattern that’s fiercely percussive. The bass shifting in the deftly played lines, hooking up on the drums to hold the track tight and light, allowing the guitars to work an ever-moving framework of fuzz, overdrive, and awesome noise. Vocals are worked in tight percussive stabs and conversational asides; sat double with the electric in through the choruses to create an ear-catching hook. Vocals and guitarist knowing when to break apart and do their thing. The two guitars playing off each other in a – no doubt – hard-earned partnership that flows so easily to the ear.

Two cracking rock bands in one listening post? The gods of rock have smiled upon us this week. Take up their glorious noisy bounty and play it all the way up to 11. …for it is written, kiddies!

    Roll on next week!

  25. Outstanding selection of tracks. My faves are…

HIVEMIND – Crying All The Time

  26. Sue

Oooh – too much good stuff this week. My choices below, but gave my heart to many more.
And, I have mentioned it before, but probably worth mentioning again judging by this weeks list –
Dear artists, if you have reached this listening post selection you have done extraordinarily well in the face of fierce competition. So please, please, ensure you have good informative up-to-date bio’s and social links on Soundcloud and Spotify and anywhere else people may find you. Don’t make it hard for people to discover who you are and what you are about – blogs/reviewers/potential fans etc. need info.

    CAFOLLA – One Year
    D-SARO – Touch And Swipe
ELL IVY – Did You Love Me?
GLASSMASTERER – Up Sleeves (feat. Archipelago)

Ola Szmidt was my personal best this time around, really stark sound – more haunting than the video clip of the recent Tory cabinet meeting.

    I would have voted for
Moa Moa, Marigolds, Dowling Poole and The Golden Age of TV
as well if I could. But I was only allowed 5 votes, it’s a fix!

Loved both Katie’s and Alfie’s voices so as far as I’m concerned they’re tied in first place.

This LP was a fine end to a great week for me – seeing our host and legend Tom live is something I’ve wanted to do since the 80’s, so last night was special. Supported wonderfully by Sam from @HowlandHum, such fabulous voice.

  55. Me G

Tick, untick, tick over weekend. my hands got cramp. apologies to anyone not in my five at a different point over the weekend you probably were.
There are excellent lyrics, outstanding vocals, great songs and then you have just pure great music without lyrics and vocals.
If you can excuse my french its a bitch of a box to chose 5 from, you feel bad about leaving quality out.

    Love all

  56. A couple of these choices wouldn’t normally be what we’d listen to but that Hivemind track is sort of irresistible, delicious female rage.

“running from a sea-change” is a lyric I immediately walked away humming and thinking about.

Moa Moa track is a journey with some interesting turns that I found myself wanting to come back to.

And Ola Szmidt as flawless as ever. <3
