  12. Poppy

What a week to finish on – gem after gem after gem! I could have so easily chosen twice as many, and it was agonising deciding which ones to leave out (my personal runner’s up prize goes to “Y Clô”, but there were so many others).

In the end, I went for some irresistible Afropop brimming over with playfulness and joy (“Dancing The Moonlight”), a wryly perky piece of magnificent fun that rehabilitates whistling and banjoes to great effect (“Wkd Blue”), an intimate vocal providing a perceptive meditation on human nature over a wonderful atmospheric beat (“Losing North”), a brilliantly hopeful, clever, and big-hearted serving of togetherness (“Everybody”), and a warm, honest, and really lovely reflection on nature (“I Am The River #33”). Have a great summer!

DAKAR AUDIO CLUB – Dancing The Moonlight

  20. Andy Page

Ending on a high note, a great selection of songs before the summer break. Some great diversity here – I could easily have included another 5 tracks at least.

I really hope people to time to absorb the lyrics and message contained in Birikiti’s track as it’s really quite affecting and very important.
Joshua Burnside evolves his songcraft into something much darker and more brooding. I’m anticipating some really distinct new sounds from him.
Maigret JNR gives us glorious Karl Blau/Scott Walkeresque vocals over an almost deep-vibe like beat, catchy and irresistible and Roe’s delightful Marco is bouncy upbeat indie pop angst.
YSTYR produce possibly the most sonic and rhythmically intriguing track this week with it’s persistent percussive drive

All in all, a great start to Summer Break. Now, where’s the pool…?

    BIRIKITI’S KITCHEN – For Grenfell
JOSHUA BURNSIDE – And You Evade Him/Born In The Blood
    MAIGRET JNR – Losing North
    ROE – Marco
YSTYR – Y Clô (The Lock)

  23. Hello, Hello!

Cracking set of tracks for our final LP before the summer break. With a few more picks, I’d have opted for Dirty Freud & Tally Spear. That being said, these ‘ere are my ‘ere choices for this ‘ere week…

    DANNY STARR – Boris Baby
    ELLIE DIXON – Space Out
    STANLEY ODD – FUWSH
TROPICAL BOYFRIEND CATALOGUE – Holding On
YSTYR – Y Clô (The Lock)

    Blurb!
    DANNY STARR – Boris Baby
    – My pick of the week & the song of 2020 so far for me. Not because it’s the best song of the year, but because it most aptly sums up everyone’s mood while making us all feel a little better about it.

    ELLIE DIXON – Space Out
    – Ellie Dixon continues to go from strength to strength with each new release and “Space Out” represents a serious step-up for an Artist who had already delivered independent pop mini-classics “Pressure” & “Ugly”. Ellie delivers a vocal performance full of humor & clever uses of timing & variation. Her considerable vocal talents put to great and effective use with all manner of double, stack, harmonies, and FX. The production makes great use of space to create an open, funky & tight richly musical experience that tastefully supports and enhances the vocal & lyrical elements of the song. The attention to detail is inspiring as the track moves from delight to delight. Continuing on this trajectory, the stars will truly beckon for this singular and exceptionally talented young artist.

    STANLEY ODD – FUWSH
    – Filthy strut bassline menaces with grunt and guts as words drop like dirty bombs; lyrical shrapnel sent splintering outwards in sarcasm, satire, and slang. Cymbals rasp and clasp the stereo-field; kick & snare buried deep into the production. Vocal FXs twist metallic, industrial salvage fused to mantra. Doubling & Harmonies provide depth and width as the track fizzes, cranks, and clanks percussive throughout, as though built out of scrap. Heavy-duty rap from the heavy-duty, industrial north of these islands. Tough sounds for a tough people.

TROPICAL BOYFRIEND CATALOGUE – Holding On
    – Light-footed indie-pop that skips & bounces its way through its runtime. Vocals walking with understated ease through the verse; lifting & soaring up in the choruses in ear-catching sing-alongs. Instrumentation cascades & shimmers about the track in layer & width. Tastefully judged use of timbre creating natural contrast and variation. The center of the track held together by accomplished work by drums & bass. A bright, summer delight for breezy afternoons & lazy evenings,

YSTYR – Y Clô (The Lock)
    – Fiercely percussive throughout; the track shuffling & hustling about like records skipping across a lake of sound. Electric-six-strings dive in sequence as riffs twitch and twinkle in ambient and delay. Kick & snare working in tight bursts of rhythm, coxing & teasing the song onwards. Vocals running in beats, lyrical ricochets, jabbing & punching in Gaelic tones. Highly enjoyable and compelling from start to finish. Great work!
