Some GREAT tracks this week!! I’ve gone for 5 tracks with energy, passion, vibrancy over perfection in performance or production. I love the lo-fi sound of ‘Survivor’ and the spoken delivery of John Alexander Scott is wonderful – I love his voice. Total BANGER from Michael Donoghue (probs my fav) xx

JOHN ALEXANDER SCOTT – They Are Waiting
    MACHINA X – Secrets

  7. Have to be truthfully honest in saying that a high number of tracks on this hot-list almost sent me to sleep this time, but votes given for my fave five that stood out for me. Seprona’s ‘Rose Tinted Eyes’ really leaped out on top with its Keane-like, subtly compelling force.

Hope you all had splendid summer breaks 😃

Shout out to CHRIS MCCONVILLE – Carefree, NOLA – Drift & JULES – Pink Skies, tasty noise all around – go have a listen in the inbox.

These ‘ere be my ‘ere picks of this ‘ere week that we have ‘ere:

    CHINWE – Intoxicated
JOHN ALEXANDER SCOTT – They Are Waiting
    JORDAN HUNT – Ocean Floor
    SHOUN SHOUN – Stuck
    STANLEI – Wild Womxn

    Blurb!

    CHINWE – Intoxicated
    – Flows like liquid steel, smokey beats & deep fermented tones submerged, vocals drift & coast set ethereal; syllables linger & hang in the ambient. Sublime.

JOHN ALEXANDER SCOTT – They Are Waiting
    – Soundscapes breathe & dissipate; pulse-locked (down) time, stopped. Words held in amber, in ambiance; painting snapshots captured simultaneously across a great landscape of humanity. The internal and external merge and fuse infinite. A people depicted in limbo. Refusing to be lost. Too nervous to hope. Too desperate to not.

    JORDAN HUNT – Ocean Floor
    – Familiar pop tones framed compelling by great care and attention; a striking depth of meaning resonates in what should not surprise, and yet, carries you throughout; caught in the wonder in the understated beauty and the dexterity of orchestration. Everything a pop song can be, should be & yet, so seldom is.

    SHOUN SHOUN – Stuck
    – You had me at “Recorded in a garage, mixed in a loft…” My pick of the week. Homebrewed, grungy goodness with glorious bassline drag and great expanses of warm saturation & hedgehog fuzz. Sing-along-like-you-don’t-give-a-fuck indie vocals. And fizzing, raspy cymbal splash (garage door shimmer). Tortured guitar tones and lo-fi grooves. Happiness.

    STANLEI – Wild Womxn
    – Filtered six-string grind, scattered howl & broken-up percussion. Vocals walking like their talking; backing vocals set chaotic & messy. Distorted vox bites. Distorted world bites. Undistorted Truth bites. Building up only to break it all down, the production tumbles & cracks in splintered musical spasm. Pushed. In your face and flicking your ear. Creative, crafted & courageous.

Hello all! I hope you had a good summer, and it’s lovely to be back here picking tracks again. I had plenty of personal runners-up this week which could just have easily gone in, but here are the five I went for. We have a sly, dextrous, atmospheric guitar instrumental worthy of the likes of Bert Jansch (“Winter Hill”), an uptempo, funny, and radio-friendly soul number that deals wonderfully with everyday feelings (“Overthinker”), a lovely, tender, beautiful little work of extraordinary gentleness (“One”), and a catchy and laid-back take on garage rock with welcome warmth (“Survivor”).Oh, and my pick of the week – the stunning “They Are Waiting”. Brilliant work!

  69. One of the benefits of lockdown and the long summer seems to have been to the quality of songwriting and recording. Great week, with some mesmerising music. so here’s my favourite five (after much deliberation).
BERRY & BALLOON TWISTER – Still: quirky tuneful ska-is pop. Perfect for the September sun.
GEORGIA & THE VINTAGE YOUTH – Overthinker: Destined to be the star turn on Jools annual Hootenanny at some point, G&TVY make great retro tinged pop music, such as this. I am a fan (what happened to that killer cover of My Favourite Things, that I played to death, though?)
GIZMO VARILLAS – Rise: great groove, uplifting chorus. well done Gizmo.
THE KING’S PARADE – Mario I am a sucker for a catchy melody. Tuneful, summery pop song.
VICTORIA JANE KEARNEY – Family Tree. Lovely guitar work, lovely vocals, lyrics, quietly epic production.

Could have easily ticked the boxes for Winter Hill, Midnight Bus, Intoxicated, Wild Women, they Are Waiting, Good Angel..loads really, this week has been that good.
