Interview: Blanid

Del Osei-Owusu interviews Blanid…

Hello Blanid, how are you?
I’m very well thanks – hope you are too!

I’m very well, thank you for asking! Congratulations on making Fresh Faves with your beautiful song Fool’s Gold, how does it feel?
It’s an honour to be there with so many other great artists!

It has beautiful lyrics that touched me. How did it come about?
It’s a personal story of unrequited love – I just got to thinking about the situation and the whole thing poured out.

You are a singer songwriter from Ireland how did it all begin for you?
I started singing in choirs when I was younger, and from there moved onto Irish traditional folk music. I then moved into doing covers, then started writing my own music!

What did you listen to growing up?
A lot of Irish traditional, classical, light classical and country music.

Your music encompasses jazz and folk, what’s the easiest and most challenging part of writing for you?
For me, it’s marrying together the lyrics and the music, I want the two to mirror one another.

You’ve been played on radio and have had a whopping 300k views. How does that feel?
It’s a bit surreal to be honest! Getting played on BBC Radio 1 is a moment I will never forget.

2020 has been a time for reflection, what have you learned about yourself?
I’ve learned that I am more resilient than I thought I was.

COVID affected the creative industry in a big way what kept you motivated?
Social media – seeing that there was still an audience out there for me that loved the music I was making was very inspiring.

What artists are getting you excited at the moment?
Griff and Saint Sister – both bringing really fresh and original vibes

You’re originally from Ireland, what three things are your favourite about there?
The people, the scenery, the food!

What are you looking forward to doing next?
Releasing my next single – I can’t wait to share it with the world!
