  9. Starting 2022, here at FOTN, we’re inviting people involved in the independent music scene to be weekly guest moderators to stir up the pot, encourage diversity, and highlight the work done by guest moderators in support of the grassroots music scene. This week our guest moderator is Phoebe Coco [@phoebecoco].

London-based artist and composer Phoebe Coco released her acclaimed debut album in 2020, ‘My White Horse & I’; earning local, national, and international radio play, including BBC 6 Music. That same year, Phoebe was nominated for best female artist of the year in the Radio Wigwam awards.

Phoebe Coco currently performs and writes songs about and for the environment, in particular, trees, with a project entitled ‘Tree Song’. She currently has a musical ‘Tree Song Tree Trail’, where her songs can be heard, installed in green spaces across London. Her recent writings and performances about trees have been aired by renowned author Robert Macfarlane on BBC 4 Front Row. On this occasion, Phoebe performed her own special vocal arrangement of his ‘Charm-against-Harm’: ‘Heartwood’.

As well as upcoming new releases, you can also catch Pheobe live on air this Saturday at 2 pm on Hoxton Radio (performing at the Hoxton Summer Fair) and on Thursday the 28th of July at The George Tavern (London). Check Phoebe’s linktr.ee and be sure to follow her socials for further info about live shows & future releases and other musical projects.

  11. Hello, Hello,

Smashing Inbox to go into the summer break… well worth having a listen through – lots of gems to discover. Here are my picks:

    AGAAMA – WhichWay
BITMAP – Nothing To Be Afraid Of
    LAZY HABITS – Coming Around
OWEN DUFF – Our Bed Is A Graveyard
    TINA BOONSTRA – Martha

    **Blurb**

    AGAAMA – WhichWay
    – Vocals whisper slip across sonic bursts & explosions – Cine Pop Oddity

BITMAP – Nothing To Be Afraid Of
    – Dirty Scissor Sisters set funky against filthy electric six-string rust – Spank it!

    LAZY HABITS – Coming Around
    – Brassy stabs & swirls; beat smacked & syncopated; words delivered in rolls, flicks, and rolls. – Funk from bass to hat.

OWEN DUFF – Our Bed Is A Graveyard
    – Inspired folktronica tones collide & contrast; drums drop deep & distant; Vocals descend in melancholic melody. – Raw Emotion captured in musical form.

    TINA BOONSTRA – Martha
    – When I heard this song last week, it broke my heart. One of the stand-out tracks of the year for me. A courageous act of songwriting sublimely crafted and heartbreakingly understated in its delivery.

    ****
That be that. I wish you all a very wonderful summer… and if you find yourself in need of new music, my New Independent Music Friday refreshes 100% every Friday.

And my own new single ‘Panic’ will be out Friday 5th August on all platforms; along with my debut LP ‘We Need Light in the Dark’ out the same day on an exclusive early release via Bandcamp. Previews & Pre-Saves via my tobisonics.com website – any and all support is greatly appreciated!

SKINNYBOY TUNES FEATURING MILSKY – Beat Of The Drum
THE JOJO MAN BAND – The Sky

congrats ALL for making The Listening Post – & good luck to EVERYONE!

As always, an incredibly strong Listening Post – much thanks & appreciation to the Moderators who go through nearly 200 tracks in the inbox each week to narrow down to the 25 – enjoy the summer break!!!

a bit like being asked to throw 20 of one’s favourite possessions out of the window (i.e. next to impossible to choose just 5) — these survived the defenestration:

AGAAMA – Which Way [sonically decadent & dangerous…& utterly thrilling: both viscerally & intellectually]
AGENT STARLING – Valley To Mountainside [Trademark Agent Starling ‘Möbius spirals of bass and vocal mantra’; a wayward mescaline-waltz; soundtrack for a mash-up of the graveyard scenes from Wicker Man & Easy Rider; and – in the instrumental breakdowns – sublime in a spaced-out Country Joe & The Fish\Incredible String Band beautiful & disturbing manner]
OWEN DUFF – Our Bed Is A Graveyard [masterclass of songwriting: music, words & arrangement – the ebb & slow-build swells incredibly powerful; plus spectacular fine sonic detail intensifying crucial moments; superb!)
SKINNYBOY TUNES FEATURING MILSKY – Beat Of The Drum [slightly reminiscent of the brilliant Isaac Chambers\Dub Princess collaborations in the inch-perfect tones and textures; the ‘laid-back chill’ saturation of the horns & the plaintive melodica; delicious wah-guitar weaving around the ace vocals; & – around 2:24 – rhythmic magic!!!]
THE JOJO MAN BAND – The Sky [if Syd Barrett had made a guest contribution to The Beatles’ White Album it might have sounded a little like this; wonderful chord progression and fingerpicking – & w/ the words and melody – uplifting & sad at the same time; stunning guitar figures & subtle and evocative psych processing; & absolutely perfect runtime]

Leo Slayer (loathsome guitar strangler for Junkyard of Silenced Poets)

  13. Rachael Harris

So glad ‘Tricks’ is being enjoyed 🙂

Reading everyone’s comments and listening through myself has really hammered home just how different songs speak to different people, regardless of rating them on the scale of ‘good’. <3

My top 5 cos they hit me in different ways are:

Dead Anyway – None of It (slap in the face wow)
Lazy Habits – Coming Around (VIBE, couldn't not move to this!)

This week, I’ve gone for a catchy and refreshing post-punk-disco fusion (“Nothing To Be Afraid Of”), a bright and exuberant slice of joyous abandon (“Ayo”), a perfect marriage of dance-rock and spoken word (“None Of It”), an unmitigated funky barnstormer “(“Just Can’t Wait”), and an arresting electro-folk miniature (“The Sky”). Hope you all have a brilliant summer!
