Songwriting Masterclass 2012

Video from my workshop at the 2012 BBC Introducing Masterclass at Abbey Road on the psychology of songwriting. Unfortunately many of the people booked for this session got delayed at Maida Vale studios and didn’t arrive – it felt a bit strange giving this 90 minute talk to a half-empty room – compared to the crackling packed energy of the hour-longย  2011 workshop.

As promised in the video, here’s my DIY rhyming list – for an explanation on how to use it, fast-forward to around 0:29 mins in the video:

B, C, D, F, G, H, J, (K) L, M, N, P, QU, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z
BR, CR, DR, FR, GR, PR, TR, TW
BL, CL, FL, GL, PL,
SL, SC, SH, SHL, SM, SN, ST, SPR, SPL, STR, SW, SCR, SQU,
CH, TH

The specific Immersion Songwriting technique mentioned in this talk comes is explained in full here:

There are of course many other excellent books and different songwriting techniques available. You’ll also find further resources for writers and artists on the Advice section of the main BBC Introducing website.

Or your right side! ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks very much for all your info, I still refer back to things you said that day, so thank you very much… Please could you possibly get in contact with me as i’ve just released an amazing new album along with my band mates and i feel it’s very good and worth a listen, as you were such a big influence on my Musician’s Masterclass trip, i’d like you to hear it first before anyone else ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thanks for your time, and cheers again for your informative talk… Don’t get it right, get it written, has been handed down by you and is now and has been since you told it to me, my saying!! ๐Ÿ™‚ Cheers again,

Hi Julles – thanks for your kind words, and I’m really glad the Masterclass was ghelpful. But alas I’m swamped with music these days (see video below) and really no longer have time to listen to albums. best thing will be if you can send us your lead track via the front page of this blog any Monday to Thursday afternoon and the whole team and I will definitely give it a listen. If any of us think it’s as amazing as you do, you can be certain that we’ll feature it on our Listening Post that weekend, and if it floats my boat personally I’ll also give it some airplay on my BBC Introducing Mixtape…
