Eclectic Picks: Batch 491

Every week Signal Committee present an Eclectic Picks playlist. All tracks are selected from the full inbox of 200 tracks that are submitted each week to Fresh On The Net. This week all the credit goes to our special guest curator, Floral Image.

WHAT DO WE LOOK FOR?

Our playlists are orientated to the alternative music fan. Lyrics are not essential, abstract ideas are embraced and the fusing of different genres is encouraged. If you used to write band names on your pencil case at school, you’ll probably like our playlists.

INTRODUCING FLORAL IMAGE

Floral Image first came to our attention back in December 2022 with Babe & The Devil, giving nods to the likes of Tame Impala with their lush brand of psychedelia. They swiftly returned not just to the Eclectic Picks, but to the Fresh Faves, with Gallipoli. It was at this point that we stumbled on one of their music videos, and it wasn’t until writing this that we realised that there was plenty more where that came from. Our only criticism would be that they missed Manchester and Leeds off their UK tour later this year! In the meantime they’ve done the Eclectic Picks proud by digging out some of the finest unsigned, alternative music out there…

A FEW WORDS FROM FLORAL IMAGE

LOST SIGNAL – Secret Retreat

Swirling sound design that creates a world of wonder and brightness. Honestly, this makes me so happy. Maybe it takes me back to a dream I once had? Either that or a Nintendo 64 game I once played.

BULZARA – Date Night

Proper filthy synth bass and breakbeat drum samples that make me want to take on the world. I can’t say I’ve ever had a date night like this though? I want what she’s having…

THE MOTOR SHOW – Financial Times (Radio Edit)

Cheerfully grim and depressing in the best possible way. Loved the moody attitude of it all, the on-point lyrics and inspired vocal delivery that I am sure is an exact copy of my inner monologue precisely 3 days before Pay Day.

LA FRENCH – Shhhh….

What a delight this is to listen to – honestly I could have this on repeat for hours. It is a warm, earthy and euphoric ambient masterpiece. Precisely what I would want to hear 4 hours in a trip.

THE LOVEDOGS – Love Is Not The Solution

Big driving synth rock that really gets me going. Would love to hear this at 1am on Friday night at a festival – in a tent of course with big ass strobe beams.

SYREL – The Final Chapter

I mean come on, this is incredible. One of the most interesting modern classical compositions I have heard in a long time. Also getting shades of Jon Barry at times…

PLATZWAVE – A Very Old Space Station

Yummy yummy warehouse ambient techno that really gets me excited. Watch out Aphex, PLATZWAVE is two-stepping their way to your rusty space station.

TENDERHOST – Warm Plasticine

Songwriting at its finest, most interesting and unhinged. As a childhood fan of musicals and 70s bands like Supertramp, this hits home. Cannot wait to see this live at some point in the future as I know I will blow away.

AUGUSTINE – Sun In Her Eyes

This is what I want to hear as Summer 2023 comes into full swing. Incredible production and mix that MGMT and Phoenix would be proud of. #SoundoftheSummer

PARTICLE DRIFT – Promises Made Of Moonlight

Blissful and uplifting electro beats and vocal melodies that make me float off into an futuristic world of geometric shapes and stardust.

ALEXYS – Feels (Too Much) Like Old Times

Beautiful. Just wonderfully beautiful and lovely. Alexys giving you an audio hug from behind their piano. This one took me to a windy Autumn walk in the woods and made me totes emosh.

JACK GORDON – LEEROY

A hypnotic trancelike record that makes me want to dance naked. I mean, how can you not move to that bassline?

REBELLIOUS JUKEBOX – Crazy Days Of Summer

This took me to a simpler time and made me feel very warm inside. The synth sounds, wonderful chord structures and beautiful melodies took me there.

MUOWO – Space Charge

Thumping techno, just what the doctor ordered. Really want to hear this whenever I next go out clubbing. You had me at that kick sound.

CLAUDIA FENOGLIO – Alaska

This is a perfectly crafted pop song in my opinion and what a liquid voice you have Claudia! Catchy hooks everywhere, a really interesting intro, tasteful nods to country and even a middle-eight (Floral Image’s best friend).
