On Thursdays Del Osei-Owusu sits down with an artist on the FOTN radar, shares a cup of tea and biscuits and listens to their story. This week, Peter Kaszas brought some interesting biscuits – banana and bacon ones!
Hello Peter how are you?
Thank you for having me. I really appreciate it!
Congratulations on the release of “Turn Back” how does it feel?
Thank you, I am very excited! I’m very curious to see how the song will be received and I really hope it reaches a lot of people.
It’s a great track what’s the story behind it?
I was going through a very difficult time when this song came out of me. I wanted to make a cool rhythm song. I was looking for a completely different mood than I was in at the time.
You are a musician and singer songwriter from Hungary how did it all begin for you?
My father was also a musician and composer, so music has been present in my life since childhood. When I was 6 years old, I was taken to the local music school, where I studied classical percussion instruments. Songwriting and singing have been with me since the beginning. My father played a lot of music abroad at that time, and he showed a lot of music that was not available in our country at that time.
What did you listen to growing up?
As I mentioned, my father brought home a lot of music, mostly vocal pop music. Level 42, Earth, wind and Fire, Michael Bolton, Richard Marx, Sting…Of course, I listened to jazz, rock and everything in between and still listen to it today. I am very glad that this music influenced me.
It is said that you took up the drums when watching Buddy Rich on The Muppet Show, who in your opinion won the Animal versus Buddy Rich drum battle?
I think that was the only night Buddy Rich lost a battle…just kidding! Buddy Rich has always been inimitable, unique and pioneering. Wish I could see more of that drum battle!
You’ve toured the world and played with some impressive artists, what’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
That music has a magical power. It’s wonderful to see people surrendering to the music. And the other is that no matter how tired you are from the trip, you still have to give your best, because that’s why people come from hundreds of kilometers away.
If you could put together a band of your favourite musicians to jam with who would be in the line up?
Wow…John Mayer would play guitar for sure. Mark King (Level 42) on bass and Jonah Nilsson from Dirty Loops on keyboards. This would be a very good basis, although I’m not sure I would dare to sing!
What are you listening to at the moment?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Jacob Collier records lately, especially the last one. Also Dirty Loops, Kurt Elling, Brian McKnight anytime.
What’s next for you?
Now the most important thing is to promote “Turn Back”, that’s what I’m most busy with now.
After that, I want to release an EP in a couple of months, so I’m working on the new songs.
