Congratulations on the release of “Uncanny Valley” how does it feel?
Thank you:) I feel a sense of relief now that the song is finally out. It’s been in the works for so long, and I’m slowly learning to accept the pace of my workflow. I’m super excited for the world to hear Uncanny Valley!
What’s the story behind the song?
The story behind the song is an AI robot becoming conscious and reflecting on the state of
humanity. The term ‘Uncanny Valley’ is actually an AI term that refers to the eerie feeling one
gets when viewing something that is almost human but something is slightly off. I think AI is a
very interesting phenomenon that is growing in the world, and I believe humans created it in our own image. Perhaps one day when AI becomes conscious, it will determine by our own “human”
measures that some of the darker aspects of humanity are inhuman or “Uncanny Valley”
.
You’re an artist based in London and New York, how did it all begin for you?
What did you listen to growing up?
I actually started in theater and visual arts. I always wanted to make music, but never thought I had it in me to produce and write music. During Covid, I finally decided to give it a chance and to be consistent with learning about music production. Growing up, my parents never introduced me to any older American or British classics, so little me was only exposed to the radio and the internet. I literally only listened to artists like Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Ke$ha, Heidi Montag, (I love Ke$sha forever) and Skrillex. I was drawn to artists that had really strong personalities in their music.
You’re also a visual artist, who are your influences?
I actually have always been more influenced by musicians with strong visual identities like Bjork
and Sevdaliza. I also really love the photographer Ren Hang. Sadly he passed away, but his
work really left a big imprint on me.
You played violin in orchestras growing up, quite a change from your sound now. What
were your favourite pieces to play?
I liked to play Meditation from Thais by Jules Massenet. It’s very calming which is good for me.
You’re also fond of classical music despite being into EDM, who are your top 3
composers?
Felix Mendelssohn, Max Bruch, and Mozart.
You live in New York and London, what are your top 3 favourite things about each city?
Firstly, what I like about New York is the feeling that you can be whoever you want to be. I don’t
mean that in the cheesy American dream kind of way. I mean you can essentially dress and act
however you like (for better or for worse) and no one will even stop to look at you. For me, that
was great for me to develop in my artistic cocoon, and to embrace the part of my artistry that
makes me unique. Second, I love that things are open late or never close. I’m a night owl, and It just works so well for me. Third, I love how vibrant and deep-rooted the queer community is in
New York. It made me feel at home, and I didn’t appreciate this enough until I left.
I have not been in London long enough to have a thorough opinion on it, so this is just from my
limited experience. The first thing I love about London is the European influence on the
electronic music scene. I started listening to more techno, trance, and acid since being in this
part of the world. I LOVE acid basslines, and am actually including it in a lot of my upcoming
songs! The second thing I love about London is the public transport. I’ve had my fair share of
scary NYC subway experiences and I just so appreciate how clean and orderly public transport
usually is here. The third thing I love about London is the plethora of parks and gardens. I love
spending time in these areas, and even love those old churches with the graves.
What are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment I am listening to TDJ’s song Addictive/Predictive. It’s so trancey and nostalgic
feeling. I am also listening to Heidi Montag’s Superficial album. I love her, and I’m so happy it’s
made a resurgence. The world was not ready for her back then, but look at her now.
What are you looking forward to in 2025?
I’m looking forward to performing live:)
