Jim’s Pick ‘n’ Mix #1

This week Jim Craigen debuts his new occasional series for Fresh On The Net – featuring a selection of favourite new tunes – drawn from a variety of sources.

This first Pick ‘n’ Mix showcases ten excellent tracks that come from a variety of places, and cover a mix of genres. Some are from artists who have submitted tracks to the Fresh on the Net Listening Post, and I have come across others whilst scouring the internet for great new music. I hope you hear a few gems that you may not have come across before, and I’ve also added a little information about the tracks below.

LONELY TOURIST – Another Statistic
Grabbing you right from the off, this is a brilliant two minutes of garage influenced alternative pop from Bristol based Lonely Tourist.

JOHNNY PANIC & THE FEVER – Dying Breed of Men
The outrage is that there is no one called Johnny Panic in this 7-piece band from Liverpool, but if you enjoy a bit of art-rock then you can forgive their deceit. A definite foot-tapper.

SHY NATURE – Lie Back
London band Shy Nature follow up last year’s indie gem called Deadly Sin with an equally catchy tune.

JUMP THE SHARK – English Rain
We had enough rain in England this winter, but summertime definitely comes early with this delightfully harmonious folk track. All you need now is a bucket and spade.

SCORPIO LOON – Addicted To You
Is this electro dance or just plain pop? Either way Scorpio Loon will surely have you shakin’ various parts of your body. An interesting listen.

SPRING KING – Mumma
This is a terrifically rousing indie song from “Avocado City” based Spring King, and with a catchy chorus that grabs you the first time you hear it.

SASKWATCH – Born to Break Your Heart
We’re heading down under to Melbourne Australia for this track, which perfectly highlights the soulful RnB that the 9-piece Saskwatch produce.

LUCOBAND – Love and Lies
With self-confessed influences that include The Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes, Love and Lies goes straight for the indie jugular, and scores a hit.

WEATHERBIRD – Johnny Strange
If you enjoy a bit of loud alternative rock then look no further than Weatherbird. Turn the volume up first though, to ensure you also introduce their excellent music to your neighbours!

SILENCES – Emma
To finish this debut Pick ‘n’ Mix, and at the opposite end of the volume scale compared with Weatherbird, is this beautifully crafted song from Irish band Silences. Now lay back and chill.

Jim Craigen

I’m a St. Albans based music enthusiast and relatively tall person. I’ve a fairly eclectic taste, but exploring new music from independent and emerging artists is something I especially enjoy, which is how I came across Fresh on the Net in the first place. Additionally I'm a keen consumer of radio and vinyl, and am in charge of beards (& music) at Alternative Friday. I can also be found sharing more impressive new music on Twitter, Spotify, and Soundcloud.

    Thanks for the kind comments.

  5. Well done! Great to see so much effort finding new music, especially the fact that musicians not using the Uploader/Fresh on the net will still be heard. Nice one!
