THIS WEEK:DOUGLAS DARE
Douglas Dare is a London-based singer-songwriter, originally from the coastal town of Bridport, South West England.
Douglas sings quite unlike anyone I’ve heard before and thats the joy of the human voice,‘Lungful’ jumped out of the speakers and at once I was lost, all at sea,yet wrapped in the warmth of home. With a sweet piano refrain that promises new beginnings & wonky claps & electronica that shift, dip & flow in all the right places – this is a stonker of a tune.
With a name straight out of 1950’s B-Movie Super Hero-dom Douglas Dare released his first EP ‘Seven Hours’ in September 2013 on the fine Erased Tapes label. After an extensive European tour with fellow Erased Tapes artist, Ólafur Arnalds, Douglas began recording his debut album ‘Whelm’ with his drummer/producer Fabian Prynn, before embarking on his first North American tour with label mate Nils Frahm in early 2014.
The Whelm album is out now in all good music outlets & with Douglas currently touring Europe and making more & more friends with his beautiful music its a good time to get to know the music of Mr Douglas Dare.
Thanks for stopping by Douglas, best of luck on your journey & over to you

1. What are you up to at the moment?
I’m about to embark on my first headline European Tour where we’ll be performing the album for the first time. My drummer and I are going all around Germany, Belgium, Holand, Denmark and France.
2. Favourite childhood memory?
Colouring in my dog with felt tip pens when I was 6. I was woke up with my mum shouting at me. I was asleep in the dog kennel surrounded by broken felt tips. The dog didn’t mind.
3. Hero?
PJ Harvey. I grew up with Polly just up the road. Not only has she come from a very small place and done incredibly well but she’s recorded countless amazing albums.
4. Villain?
Um, I don’t think I have one. Simon Fuller and Cowel perhaps, for destroying the general publics’ idea of where music comes from.
5. What/who makes you laugh?
People falling over (including myself/ especially myself).
6. Describe what you do?
I write stories and sing them. Sometimes I record the stories and quite often I perform them live to other humans.
7. Who’s hair would you like to have for just one day?
St. Vincent’s circa her most recent album. Grey and like she put her finger in a socket.
8. Best musical experience to date?
Being front row at the Troxy when PJ Harvey played the opening bars of Big Exit.
9. What artist inspires you?
Other than PJ Harvey? … Many; Daniel Rossen, Chet Baker, Thome Yorke, Jon Hopkins, Annie Clarke…
10. What does Fresh On The Net mean to you?
Either new things on the world wide web OR the latest catch from the sea down at my local beach West Bay, Bridport.
Thats excellent, i’ll try and book the bugger, before he gets to big and gets to the stage of his career where he can afford to drive a rolls into a swimming pool.
