Tea, Biscuits And A Chat: Lekiddo – Lord Of The Lobsters!

On Thursdays, Del Osei-Owusu sits down with a cuppa and biscuits with artists on the Fresh On The Net radar. This week, it’s Lekiddo – Lord Of The Lobsters! Lekiddo brought some border dark chocolate gingers and this is what they talked about.

LEKIDDO – Lord of The Lobsters! How are you?

I’m Lobsterliciously well Del, thanks for asking 🧡 And how are you doing?

I am well, thankyou!

It’s festival season how are preparations going?

Preparations for festival season are going well. Getting my body up to peak fitness and lots of rehearsing. I’ve got a hometown gig in beautiful London at Lambeth Country Show, Brockwell Park, Brixton at 6pm on Saturday 8th June 2024, Arts & Culture stage.
And…
26 – 30 June 2024, LEKIDDO – Lord of The Lobsters! returns #Lobsterliciously back performing 8 live shows at Glastonbury Festival 2024, Spreading the Lobster Love with all the Beautiful PinchyPinchykisskiss Peoples.

You have played Glastonbury several times now, what’s been your favourite year so far?

It’s hard to pick a favourite Glastonbury year, they’ve all been phenomenally clawsome with my audiences growing year on year!! The hot ones, the wet and the muddy ones, the stage rushes and being raised overhead by fans. There’s always a #glasto_rainbow!!

It’s been mind blowing seeing quotes in The Guardian like: …”seeing something inexplicably brilliant, The Glasto institution that is joy-pop legend LEKIDDO – Lord of The Lobsters! ”
Hearing shout outs and name checks from fans on BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music, Steve Lamacq show saying, LEKIDDO – Lord of The Lobsters! is their “must see” and “highlight of the festival”. …And Andy says “LEKIDDO – Lord of The Lobsters! is The BEST thing thats every played at Glastonbury”

Airplay from the great Tom Robinson BBC Mixtape and live interviews with Glastonbury Festival’s Worthy FM Radio.

One year I woke to find Tim Jonze of The Guardian had given LEKIDDO – Lord of The Lobsters! a 5/5 star rating and said the “Unrelenting joyous Euro disco …Lekiddo’s sugar-rush, outsider pop is the heart of the party … the bar has been set.’ – Lord of The Lobsters! is No.1 in The Glastonbury Festival People’s Playlist with To The Beach.

And more lately LEKIDDO – Lord of The Lobsters! is what Glastonbury describes as “a cult classic… There is always good feedback about you, you are a true crowd pleaser.”

It’s always Lobsterliciously beautiful seeing all my beautiful PinchyPinchykisskiss peoples and Spreading the Lobster Love with them all.

Oh and Glastonbury 2023, when I was singing “It’s Christmas Baby, I Bet You Don’t Know What I’ll Bring You…..” I opened my arms wide to the crowd and the Red Arrows whooshed in over my head, …quite something, perfect timing!! 😀

As a veteran festival goer were there any acts that blew your mind?

Chic at Lounge on The Farm and again at Glastonbury on The Pyramid Stage, The Killers, Isle of Wight Festival. Dolly at Glasto (she actually brought a tear to my eye singing ‘Banks of the Ohio’ reminding me of singing it playing guitars in childhood, without knowing it was a Dolly song!!!),
Parliament / Funkadelic at West Holts, Glasto and having the opportunity of having a private backstage chat with the legendary George Clinton.
Janelle Monáe, West Holts at Glasto was awesome.
And a private surprise up close, front row gig with Celeste at The PRS oasis just after we’d chatted over a pizza. Thanks Celeste for the onstage PinchyPinchykisskiss

Tell us about LEKIDDO – Lord Of The Lobsters! How did this come into being?

LEKIDDO is my name, and thankfully, The Lobsters chose me as their Lord, I accepted (…naturally :-D)
It’s an honour to Spread Lobster Love, everywhere…

What did you listen to starting out?

I was weaned on High-Life and Calypso music from a Ghanaian party-loving home, I fused these influences with Parliament Funk, Pop and an incorrigible disco fever to create the sound of LEKIDDO – Lord of The Lobsters!!

Your lyrics and music reflect a very unique outlook on life, what’s your inspiration for writing?

I love life and drawing from my experiences and sharing joy with others. Its so joyous seeing people light up during performances and getting feedback of positivity from my fans. We’ve kinda got a creative loop going…

Ian McMillan, BBC Radio 3 The Verb interviewed me at Glastonbury said: “That is beautiful LEKIDDO. Somehow in the writing, story telling and the singing you’ve captured joy!”

What’s your process?

It varies from song to song, however I always make sure I have the ability to capture an inspiring moment, lyrically, melodiously or both. Some songs just come fully formed. Normally a lyric comes to mind with the melody line. Then there’s the further creative process of recording engineering and producing the tracks for record, airplay and backing tracks for live work.

You’re playing Glastonbury again this year what are your three survival tips?
