ALAN DREEZER:
FERAL THE WOLF – NORTH
This epic slice of electronic rock was one of my favourites this week and has some stunning visuals to complement it too!
MONOLAND – CIRC
A big fan of this Berlin based outfits EP “First” with this being a stand out track
DEL OSEI-OWUSU/PLATINUMMIND:
VIPERTIME & MORON BUTLER – Waugh And Peace
I love it when worlds collide. The pun in the name is what caught my attention because I love a good pun! Evelyn Waugh??? NICE. The other thing I like about this song is that it’s got punk and it’s got sax. HOW??? How did that happen? See? Worlds colliding.
BRAPURPLE – See
Brapurple brings us a tune from Ghana, and it’s so good, mixing a litte Twi with English rapping over a trap beat. Great to hear from you!
JOHN MICHIE:
BASHARAN – Cinnamon
Great rock’n’roll track with fizzy vocals and classic toned guitars, driven by a punchy backbeat and a raw, no-frills energy. Tight, loud, and superb solo!
THE DAWN ROAR – Yesterday’s Tomorrow Today
A smouldering, slow-burning track with honeyed vocals and mellow, vintage-toned guitars. The track drifts along on a warm, quietly hypnotic vibe.
NEIL MARCH:
D+VE – +The R+ins Came
We don’t get many Sound Art tracks but this evocative piece makes such imaginative use of a cleverly configured combination of sounds and textures that reflect the track’s title.
PAUL KERR:
SHINY BRAIN CRAYONS – They Call Us Bohemians
Dry, strange and oddly addictive, They Call Us Bohemians from London duo SHINY BRAIN CRAYONS is all twitchy minimalism and art school cool. It’s smart art pop that smirks instead of screams with just enough melody to sneak into your head and rearrange your synapses.
BGH – Can I Say Something To You?
A curious melange of different styles that somehow works. Can I Say Something To You starts all slacker rock having a ciggie break cool, trundling along with laid-back sincerity. Then it inexplicably, intriguingly morphs into an indie hymn, like the Cranberries having an epiphany before exploding into lovable sparky, snarky indie-pop. It’s a pocket-sized triptych of indie impulses that harmonise in their own uniquely charming utterly endearing way.
SHARON PEARCE:
BOXTAPE – Freakshow
The beat is big and catchy, but the softer piano parts are what really got me. That’s where the vocals feel the most honest. I love how it builds from quiet and emotional to full-on chaos. It just feels like it’s for anyone who’s ever felt a bit different.
DPM PROJECT AND HOLLY NATASJA – Unveiling
Unveiling is instantly catchy and really upbeat – it’s the kind of track that makes me want to get up and dance. I love the mix of male and female vocals; they work so well together and give the song that extra spark. It’s energetic but still has a cool edge to it.
TONY HARDY:
AUBREY VAN GELDED – Cameron Figment
With FOTN, you learn something new every week. Milwaukee native Aubrey Van Gelded is a four-time FAWM winner, multi-instrumentalist and photographer; FAWM being February Album Writing Month. I am always a sucker for US basement or bedroom indie. Aubrey’s song made me think of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and has a touch of Grandaddy about it. Marvellous.
CAMILLE BAZIADOLY – Trail
Singer songwriter Camille Baziadoly was born in France and is now based in Oxford. I was drawn by the dream-like quality of Camille’s voice in “Trail” as she imagines being lost in a desert. There seem to be analogue synths in there, along with imaginative vocal layers and all manner of percussive effects which add to the general mystique of the piece. Beguiling and intriguing.
Always interesting to hear the alt picks by my fellow Mods. Another eclectic list this week.
