Tea Biscuits And A Chat: Berenice

Del Osei-Owusu sits down with artists on the FOTN radar and gets them to tell their origin story over a cup of tea and biscuits. This week Berenice is in the hotseat and she brought Krumiri from Piedmont region of Italy. They are fit for a king!

Congratulations on the release of “Wifey Material” how does it feel?

It feels really exciting. This one actually moved quite quickly from idea to release, which made the whole thing feel very instinctive and immediate. Sometimes songs sit with you for years but this felt very “now,” very reactive to conversations happening around me. The response so far has been incredible, which has been really special to watch unfold in real time.

What’s the story behind the song?

It came from a long conversation I just had with my best friend about the modern expectations placed on women. There’s this quiet pressure to be everything at once, accomplished, emotionally fluent, beautiful, self aware, low maintenance, high achieving, all while making it look effortless. The song plays with that idea. On the surface it leans into the gloss and polish, but underneath it’s gently questioning how sustainable that perfection really is.

What was the easiest and most challenging part of recording it?

The easiest part was stepping into the character of the song. There’s a certain composure and knowingness in the delivery that felt very natural once we found it. The most challenging part was the production, making sure it felt sleek and pop driven while still letting the personality and irony come through.

You’re a London based singer songwriter how did it all begin for you?

Songwriting has always been something very private for me. It was my own special way of processing things before I even thought of it professionally. Moving to London gave it momentum. Being surrounded by live music constantly made it feel tangible, like something I could really build a world around rather than just keeping it to myself.

What did you listen to growing up?

I grew up on strong female voices like Miley Cryrus, Blondie, Alanis Morissette, women who each had such a clear identity and emotional world around them. That blend of vulnerability and theatricality definitely shaped me.

You’ve had some extraordinary moments in your journey so far, what has been a pinch me moment for you?

Hearing my music on BBC Radio 1 for the first time was surreal. Also playing headline shows and hearing people sing the lyrics back to me, stuff I literally wrote alone in my room. That shift from something internal to something shared never stops feeling wild.

Wifey Material is essentially a celebration of womanhood, who are the top 3 women you look up to?

My mum is definitely number one. She’s incredibly strong and terrifyingly perceptive but in a very quiet, elegant way, which shaped how I understand femininity a lot. Then honestly I’d say my female friendships. They’re the foundation of the woman I’ve become, and I don’t think I’d have the same depth of understanding of myself or reality without everything we’ve built and navigated together. So much of Wifey Material actually came from conversations with them. The humour, the contradictions, the pressure we joke about but also feel. They’re constant reference points for me creatively. I’m surrounded by pretty incredible women.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I’m reading Ozzy’s biography at the moment so there’s a lot of  Blizzard of Ozz in the mix. I also literally just watched Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl set and it blew my mind. Then the usuals: Blondie, Joan, Miley, Avril, Anastacia, Alanis. My girlies.

What are you looking forward to doing in 2026?

Putting out a lot of new music and taking this wifey world to bigger live stages. I’m really looking forward to expanding both the sonic and visual world around it and connecting with audiences on a much wider scale.
