MATTHEW SAXON performs Jóga
from Björk’s 1997 album Homogenic.
Matt Saxon – frontman with Newcastle’s Grandfather Birds and drummer with NWKS (Nateley’s Whore’s Kid Sister) – has given us the exclusive first view of this live performance video: his radical re-imagining of the Björk classic Jóga as a delicate acoustic guitar ballad.
“Apart from looking up the lyrics online I arranged this version of Jóga from memory” says Matt “while living in Iceland in 2012. I was planning on keeping it to myself until I showed it to a friend who, after twisting my arm, encouraged me to perform it at a Sofar Sounds show in Newcastle. I shot this video at a bar in the middle of the night after it had closed – thanks to the owner, who is a friend.”
Matt is planning a solo European tour for April/May – dates will be announced in due course via his website at matthewsaxon.com.
You can also keep up with Grandfather Birds via their Facebook page – and see my own mashup video for their Toon indie classic Higher Bridges on YouTube.
Love it! Nice one Matt x
