Animal Noisewere featured by Johnno in last week’s inaugural Prick & Ding feature. Their song Run Loose sounded pretty good and was enough to send me to the BBC Introducing Uploader – where their song Baddow (below) blew my socks off.
It’s a wonderful piece of music – played from beginning to end with such fresh, ferocious energy that I immediately decided to embed it here so you could hear it too. I also intended to email the Soundcloud link to Steve Lamacq since he doesn’t use the Uploader.
Unfortunately, as things stood this morning there was only a 65 seond “teaser” to be heard on their website and Soundcloud.
This missed opportunity by three brilliant musicians made me want to weep with frustration. If you’ve got a killer, career-changing song, why wouldn’t you want as many people as possible to hear it and tell all their friends about it ? Why would anyone think it more important to squeeze a few dozen extra sales from iTunes than risk the listening public hearing it for free ?
The great Andrew Dubber puts it like this:
“People have to hear music, then they will grow to like it, and then finally, if you’re lucky, they will engage in an economic relationship to consume that music…. That’s the order it has to happen in. There’s no point in hoping that people will buy the music, then hear it, then like it. They just won’t. A (short) sample is a waste of your time and bandwidth. It’s worse than useless. That’s not enough to get to like your music. Let them hear it, keep it, live with it. And then bring them back as a fan.”
You can read Dubber’s whole article here – but read on…
UPDATE: I TAKE IT ALL BACK!!!
Check out this bad boy – Animal Noise have just uploaded the full version of Baddow to their Soundcloud – and it totally rocks:
If you’re anywhere near London this Saturday night go and see them if you possibly can at Club Fandango at The Bull & Gate. Alas I’ll be on air at 6 Music that night, but Johnno promises me their live show is unbefrigginglievable and not to be missed…
The band have had the entire album streaming up for ages.
Where? I’d love to send our readers there. Lammo too, come to that…
Here you go!
(link removed by request)
Aha – one of those cunning private Soundcloud links. Though to be honest Anna, putting the tracks on a secret page doesn’t really count as “had the entire album streaming up for ages”, does it ?
Anyway thanks for the link Jess, that’s solved my Lammo problem – I’ve just mailed the link to his show and to Huw Stephens at Radio 1 cos I really think Baddow is special. We’re also emailing the band today to ask if we can include it in this week’s BBC Introducing Mixtape.
But (since it’s a private page) we still can’t embed the track here, and people who visit the Animal Noise website can still only hear 65 seconds of this brilliant track, for reasons that are still a bit hard to understand…
Baddow is my favourite!
Having teasers up was just a marketing tool the band are in no way restrictive about who can hear their music and how much they can hear it. The link was initially private for feedback purposes, since then the band have been posting the private link to the album on all of their social networking sites so that everyone can hear the full album, and it’s been shared far and wide.
You should go see them at The Bull & Gate on Saturday 12th their live show is AMAZING.
Hi Tom,
Firstly, we just want to say how thrilled we are that you like our track enough to send it forward andgive us some airplay.
When we first released the album in March, we uploaded the whole album to our soundcloud in previews and then we uploaded full versions of the songs we thought would be most popular.
Your points are all valid and we take them all on to improve our strategies to get more exposure.
We have been posting up the whole album for people to listen to on our facebook page, and it’s available on spotify. A lot of people have shared those links around.
Since reading your post however, we have now uploaded baddow and the whole album for you to stream on soundcloud.
Here’s baddow for you to send out or download all you want.
We appreciate your constructive critisism, enjoy listening to the songs.
All the best,
Josh
